New standard · September 2026

The new EN 301 549 is out. We already test to it.

On 2 September 2026 ETSI published EN 301 549 V4.1.1, the European accessibility standard behind the EAA. It moves from WCAG 2.1 to WCAG 2.2 level AA and adds six success criteria. EqualVia covers all six today: target size in the automated scan, the other five in the guided manual checks. Your reports give the new clause numbers alongside the current ones.

The legal status, honestly

V4.1.1 isn't cited in the Official Journal of the EU yet. Until it is, V3.2.1 (WCAG 2.1 AA) is the edition that gives the presumption of conformity. WCAG 2.2 AA includes every WCAG 2.1 AA requirement (the one it drops, 4.1.1 Parsing, is now treated as always met for HTML), so testing to the new edition covers the current one too.

  2. Guided manual checks

    New

16 step-by-step checks for what no machine can judge: does it work by keyboard, can you check out with a screen reader, does the alt text say anything, are form errors clear, does it hold up at 200% zoom. About 40–60 minutes, no expertise needed.

  3. Fix and verify

    New

Every issue comes with a plain-language explanation and a suggested code fix. Fixed one? Click “I fixed it”: we re-scan the affected pages within minutes and confirm it's gone. Scheduled rescans email you if something comes back.

Evidence log

The EAA has no certificate. Your proof is the paper trail.

When an authority or a customer asks, what counts is what you tested, what you found, what you fixed, and when. Under the Act, national authorities check services, follow up complaints and verify that problems were actually corrected. EAA, Article 23 (opens another site in a new tab)

Frequently asked questions

What is WCAG?
WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) is the international standard for web accessibility. EN 301 549, the European standard behind the EAA, builds on it.
Which version of EN 301 549 do you test against?
Both. Every finding carries its WCAG 2.2 criterion and its EN 301 549 clause: from V3.2.1, the edition currently cited in the EU's Official Journal, and from V4.1.1 (published September 2026) for the six criteria new in WCAG 2.2. The statement generator lets you choose which edition your statement refers to.
What exactly does EqualVia test?
We open your pages in a real (headless) browser and test them with the axe-core engine against WCAG 2.2, with every one of its WCAG A and AA rules switched on, including the ones a default axe or Lighthouse run leaves out. On top of that we run checks axe-core can't do on its own, like measuring the contrast of text over a gradient.
Does EqualVia replace a manual audit?
Not a formal expert audit, but it gives you far more than a scanner. Automated testing finds about 57% of issues; the 16 guided manual checks walk you through the most important of the rest (keyboard, screen reader, alt text, forms, zoom), and your results go into the evidence log. For a certified audit or a legal opinion, you still need an expert.
How do I prove my site complies with the EAA?
There's no certificate. Proof is documentation: what you tested, what you found, what you fixed and when, plus a published accessibility statement. That's what the dated evidence log in EqualVia's PDF report is for, covering your scans and manual checks.
Am I legally compliant after a scan?
No, and no tool can honestly promise that. EqualVia is a technical WCAG testing tool, not legal advice; for legal questions, talk to a lawyer.
Isn't there a grace period until 2030?
Not for websites and online shops. The 2030 date comes from two narrow transitional rules: products already in use before 28 June 2025 (such as self-service terminals) and contracts already agreed by then. E-commerce services provided after 28 June 2025 must already comply. More on the misconception.
How long does a scan take?
A free single-page scan usually takes a few seconds. A scheduled multi-page crawl takes from a few minutes to several hours, depending on your plan and the size of the site. The report switches to it once every page is done.
What happens to the data collected during a scan?
The issues found belong to your account. Export them as JSON anytime, or delete them from your account settings.
What sites can be scanned?
Any publicly reachable website. We can't reach sites on an internal network or behind a login.
